Summer has started with a bang here in Austin this year and temperatures are already approaching 100. Summertime skin can be problematic, often with breakouts, dryness, irritation, and a dull appearance. Update your summer skincare routine to help your skin thrive even on those hot summer days. Here are five ways to update your skincare regimen for the season.

Say “yes” to more SPF.

Stocking up on sunscreen should be your number one priority. It is recommended that sunscreen is applied every day, no matter what the season. The time to make sunscreen use a habit is now–before you find yourself at an all-day outdoor festival or on an impromptu trip to Barton Springs–because the damage caused by UV rays can have serious consequences for your health and speed up your skin’s aging process.

It is estimated that 90 percent of skin aging is caused by the sun. People who use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher daily show 24 percent less skin aging than those who do not use sunscreen daily.

Boost your cleanser game.

Get those pores squeaky clean with the use of gel and foaming cleansers. With scorching temps and rising humidity levels, your skin’s oil production is bound to increase. It is recommended that you give your skin a thorough cleansing both day and night during the summer months.

Lighten up on the moisturizer.

Farewell to the heavy creme moisturizers that we swear by during the dry winter months. It’s time to switch to gel- or water-based moisturizers that are oil-free. A lighter moisturizer will allow your pores to breathe in order to prevent clogging and coupled with sunscreen application, your skin will still get all the moisture it needs.

Relax on the exfoliation.

Though it can be gratifying to slough off dead skin cells, it is recommended that you decrease the frequency in which you exfoliate during the summer. Exfoliating during winter provides a sense of rejuvenation as it removes dry skin. Give it a rest during the summer, especially if you have sensitive skin. Some skin types are sensitive in the summertime, due to a mix of heat, sun, and chlorine.

Refresh using gel masks.

The luxurious creme masks of winter are now the treatments of yesteryear. Hydration isn’t typically an issue for most during the sweaty summer months, so opt for a refreshing gel mask instead. Pop your gel mask in the freezer for a couple of minutes before you use. It’ll be a refreshing and cool treat on those seemingly endless hot days.
